Abuja, Nigeria – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged state governors across the country to channel public resources into projects that have a direct impact on the lives of ordinary Nigerians rather than constructing unnecessary flyovers.
Speaking during a meeting with state governors at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, the President stressed that while infrastructure development remains important, flyovers should only be built where they are genuinely needed to ease traffic congestion and improve transportation.
Tinubu noted that many communities are in greater need of quality roads, healthcare facilities, schools, clean water, security infrastructure, and job-creating investments than expensive flyover projects that offer limited benefits to residents.
According to the President, governors should focus on projects that directly enhance the quality of life of citizens, especially at a time when governments are expected to make prudent use of public funds.
He warned against spending billions of naira on flyovers in locations where traffic volume does not justify such investments, urging state leaders to instead invest in roads that improve connectivity, strengthen security operations, and support economic activities.
The President's remarks have sparked nationwide discussions on public spending priorities, with many Nigerians calling for greater investment in healthcare, education, agriculture, electricity, and employment opportunities before embarking on costly infrastructure projects.
Policy analysts say the statement reflects a growing demand for people-centred governance, where government expenditure is measured by its impact on citizens' welfare rather than the number of landmark projects commissioned.
The President reaffirmed his administration's commitment to ensuring that public resources are used efficiently to deliver meaningful development and improve the standard of living for Nigerians.
